A beautiful statement piece. An artisan weaver in rural Eswantini has made a special collection of biography baskets crafted to tell the stories of three women over three generations of her family. Siphiwe left school after falling pregnant and began weaving to support her child. Together Siphiwe and her husband had 6 more children, building a life at his homestead. Then one day he sold all their cattle and left. He did not return for 4 years and she had to leave her husband's family homestead. But with her income she was able to start her life again. This basket is an interpretation of the strength of Siphiwe and so many women like her, who are the backbone of their families. Woven using indigenous Lutindzi mountain grass and upcycled fabric cutoffs from local T-shirt factories, these materials are woven around bundles of firm Lukhasi grass that make up the core of the basket. The wrapped and woven coils of grass and navy blue fabric are shaped and stitched together. Along its spine, the basket is complemented by cow bones sourced from local abattoirs, bleached and treated by another local artisan who uses cow bone in our high-end home decor.
