Our Why
It all started on a park bench in San Francisco 20 years ago. I was sitting there staring into a fountain, wondering how to blend my degree in Cultural Anthropology, my love of travel, a desire to truly help people, preserve beautiful art, make a difference, and my knack for home décor. when I had an epiphany, I would start a company focused on unique fair trade décor items. The feeling was like nothing I have experienced before or since, it was a flash of inspiration and insight that I felt deeply in my core. I knew it was my purpose.
But then life. It’s not a business for the faint of heart, with a myriad of details, travel, and money that it would initially entail for a broke young woman. So I moved on. I went to graduate school, got married, had three kids and the dream of my décor accessories business seemed to be getting farther away. I worked for many years at a college starting new programs and managing federal, state, and local grants. But the fit wasn’t right for me, and I still held onto that revelation I had on the park bench.

The Heart Behind Purple Nest Design
I did what many people would do who are lucky enough, I would talk to my mom. She talked with me about my vision for what I wanted to create and encouraged me to pursue my dream. It is because of her guidance, support, and love that I named my business in her honor. Purple, because it was her (as well as mine and my Dad’s), favorite color. Nest, because she nurtured me in a way that gave me the courage and wings to pursue this inspired dream and turn it into a reality. My mom has since passed, so it only seems fitting that my business be named Purple Nest Design, as an ode to her love and belief in my dreams.

A Partnership that Redefined Possibility
About 8 years ago, I had the very good fortune of meeting a woman who was equally as excited and passionate about artisan-made home décor, Natalia Galarza Ceron. Being from Colombia, she and I researched tons of home décor items, especially in Latin America. We traveled to different countries to meet the artisan weavers we work with today. Her unwavering dedication and support to our work together throughout the beginning stages was instrumental in helping to create an artisan focused luxury textile décor brand. I am so proud of all that we have accomplished to this point, and know our success story continues to be written. Here’s to building a beautiful nest!
